Kericho

Kericho and the area around it are the "jewel of Kenya"; it's a beautiful and clean area in the high part of the Rift Valley. It is named after Ole Kericho, a Masai chief that died in the 18th century. It's a fairly large city, with a population of 85,000. Kericho is the center of Kenya's tea market; the country is the third largest producer in the world after Sri Lanka and India. The area is full of tea plantations and farms, as the climate is perfect for tea growing due to almost daily rain and the high altitude.

The town square of Kericho is full of flowering shrubs and shade trees; other tourist spots are the Holy Trinity Church and cemetery, as well as a war memorial. Kericho's highlands are home to the Kipsigis. Visiting their homeland will give you a beautiful view of the rolling hills and tea plantations.

The largest Sikh worship house in Africa can be found in Kericho- it's dedicated to Kericho wala, one of Sikhism's greatest saints. When you get tired of sightseeing, there are plenty of cheap and comfortable places to stay. All have good food and clean rooms. The Garden Lodge, the Fish Resort and the Mwalimu Hotel are all good choices and are a few minutes' walk from the center of town. Kericho's nightlife is thriving, with countless discotheques and bars open on weekend nights. The Urwa Inn, Mid West Hotel's disco, and Nyama Choma are great choices with friendly atmosphere and cheap beer. As you can see, africa is more than just soccer, it is a trip worth while!
